Thomas Lloyd

Thomas is a creative litigator whose practice ranges from complex commercial litigation, antitrust and intellectual property disputes, to representing individuals who have experienced discrimination and assault.  Currently, Thomas represents the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in both the state and federal courts for matters concerning the groundbreaking congestion pricing program.  Thomas has also drafted appellate briefs as part of the Kaplan Martin team representing E. Jean Carroll in her defamation suit against President Donald J. Trump.

Thomas’s previous representations include:

• Representing a global financial institution defending against allegations of anticompetitive behavior, leading international discovery efforts to force settlement with hedge-fund plaintiffs
• Representing an international telecommunications company in an internal investigation of potential violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA)
• Representing a social media giant across dozens of related suits brought by state attorneys general alleging violations of user privacy
• Representing a billion-dollar technology start up in an intellectual property dispute to successfully prevent entry of a preliminary injunction on the eve of the company’s launch
• Assessing a client’s potential litigation exposure post-acquisition across several antitrust suits targeting the entity the client sought to acquire

Throughout his career, Thomas has also maintained a robust pro bono practice focused on immigration and criminal justice causes.  This included successful representation of women separated from their children at the Texas border in asylum proceedings, preparing witnesses for credible fear interviews while inside the largest family detention center in the United States, and successfully bringing First Amendment claims against a county police department on behalf of journalist brutalized while covering the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.

Prior to joining Kaplan Martin, Thomas clerked for the Honorable Katharine H. Parker, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of New York. Thomas began his legal career as a litigation associate at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher. Thomas received his J.D. magna cum laude from the Fordham University School of Law, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. Thomas received his B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, where he led various LGBTQ advocacy initiatives.
